In 2011, Sara Lazar’s lab put novices through 8-week MBSR (27 min daily average). MRI scans showed: increased gray matter in hippocampus (memory, emotion), increased gray matter in temporoparietal junction (empathy), and decreased gray matter in amygdala (fear/stress center). Focused Attention

Minimum Effective Dose
- Beginner: 5-10 minutes daily — sufficient for measurable attention and anxiety changes in 4-8 weeks
- Optimal for brain changes: 20-30 minutes daily
- Quality over quantity: Focused 10 min beats distracted 30 min
- Guided is fine: Apps and recordings are effective
Remember: meditation is not about stopping thoughts — it’s about noticing them without following them.
